Red Barn Ranch is a remarkable education center nestled in a fertile river valley, just 30 miles south of downtown Seattle. The ranch is home to Seattle Tilth Farm Works, a hands-on learning environment where local refugees, immigrants, and other aspiring farmers can learn the ins and outs of organic farming. From growing and harvesting, to business and marketing, the farmers-in-training gain the skills they need by managing their own plots of leased land.
Back in April, a small crew from our Seattle staff spent a rainy Earth Day morning getting down and dirty on the ranch, digging a ditch that will eventually deliver electricity to a compost aeration system.
The system will help organic matter break down faster, giving the farmers easier access to quality compost. The rocky glacial soil made for some challenging digging, but we made great headway on a big project — and had a whole lot of fun doing it!
We’re happy that we could contribute a little muscle to the efforts of Seattle Tilth Farm Works, and support the farmers of our future. A big thanks to Seattle Tilth for having us!
