City Saucery, based in Brooklyn, is exactly the kind of family-run business we adore working with. Nonna, her son Michael, and Michael’s partner George, are a modern family turning out a traditional product, made from local ingredients.
Nonna is from Calabria, the southernmost (and spiciest!) region of Italy. She took all of her traditions with her, and Michael grew up in Brooklyn absorbing them – particularly the importance of preserving fresh, summery goodness for families to enjoy all year long.
They make their sauces by hand, in small batches, exactly the way Nonna learned. The ingredients are simple, top quality and locally sourced: 100% New Jersey vine-ripened tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, fresh herbs, and ingredients they either buy from nearby farms or grow themselves. Each of their four sauces – Spicy, Sweet, Leafy and Smoky – is vegan, non-GMO, dairy free, preservative free, and low in sodium. City Saucery was also recently awarded Slow Food NYC’s Snail of Approval, normally only given to restaurants!
